SQL Reporting

Dataseti believes you should be able to buy a report like you buy your pizza, if you want.  Once you choose your base report, you can either stick to what comes with the base, or you can include any of the following report add-ons.  These attributes make your report much more functional, saving you time and money down the road!

Expected Delivery Times for Reporting

Expected delivery for reporting will depend on how quickly we have access to the database or reporting environment, and how complex the report requirements are.  Generally, reports can be completed within a week, but could take longer.

We offer expedited reporting as an add-on to your base report.  If you need your report pushed to the front of the line, be sure to opt for the 24 or 48 hour add-on.  The clock will start after the report project is paid and once we have access to a copy of the database or remote access into your SSRS environment.   We will guarantee delivery of the first draft by the duration you select or we'll refund the cost of that attribute.  What do you have to lose?

Report View Specifications

When reports are designed we want to consider how it's going to look as much as how well it functions.  In the report's properties we want to be able to tell it how it should function when viewing it on a computer, and also how it looks on a page.
  • Interactive View - When you specify how the report needs to look, please include if you want to enable pagination or if you like a continuous scrolling of the data.  Just remember, when you paginate, the data will appear faster upon refresh.
  • Print View - It is what it sounds like.  Do you want your page to be in portrait or landscape mode upon viewing and printing?

Conditional Formatting

Conditional formatting is where you control the look and feel of the data based upon the value of the data.  For example, "all customer orders with the status of 'Returned' should have the entire row highlighted red."

Colors and Borders

Sometimes it's okay to have an ugly report.. when no one needs to see it.  We think adding colors and borders to the report will make that report easier to view, not just functional.  When you specify the attribute, be as descriptive as you can in the beginning, but don't worry - we're happy to accommodate minor changes without any extra costs.

Grouping & Sorting

Reports can be grouped in so many ways.  Grouping can happen at the sql query level or at the report level.  However at the end of the day, the grouping you see on the report will be the only one that matters.  Your data normally dictates how your report is going to look like.  For example you may want to report on where your departments are by location. In this case it might be North America >> Ohio >> Dayton >> Department.  Here, we have 4 actual levels of grouping, so therefore you would purchase 4 levels of grouping.  Each level contains many properties such as sorting, filtering, visibility and so on, to help present your data in a much more useful way.

SQL Joins

A SQL join is necessary when needing data from more than one table.  You can even join data from other databases, as long as there's a common value!

Report Parameters

A report parameter lets you filter the report, and you can have as many report parameters as you'd like.  There are a few different types we'd like to help you understand.
  • Hard Coded Parameter - These are the most basic of parameters.  Basically we create the parameter, then we hard-code the values to appear in the parameter's drop-down.  You can have them either single-select or multi-select.  These types of parameters work best on data that rarely changes.
  • Data-Driven Parameter - These are more involved.  What we do here is have the parameter look at your data and return the distinct values for the drop-down.  So no matter what, your parameter drop-down will always match the options you maintain in your database.  You'll never have to worry about modifying the parameters choices here!
  • Date Range Parameter - These are always fun.  This option gives you two parameters up top of the report.  One for a start date, and another for an end date.  These are perfect when you're looking for a finite date range to show for your report!
  • Date Period Parameter - These are my favorite!  Instead of a date range, you'll get a choice of the following data ranges, which will automatically select the correct dates.  These are extremely popular with managers and executives!
    • Today, Yesterday, This Week, Last Week, This Month, Last Month, This Quarter, Last Quarter, This Year, Last Year

Pivot Table

A pivot table is a great way to show summary data without the charts and graphs.  Managers love 'em!

Charts & Graphs

Reports are pretty bland without color, and what better way to summarize data than using objects like charts and graphs?  Charts are a great way to visually see how your data is doing.  Most Dataseti customers usually add on a summary chart at the top of their base detail report.  It gives the report much more appeal because of the quick access to summary data.

Each type of chart behaves different, so here's a list of charts and graphs that we offer:
Column Chart- The column chart is the most popular, allowing you to see data in sum, counts, averages, standard deviation and aggregate.  It can be grouped, stacked or spaced apart however you want.
Picture
Line Chart - The Line chart is awesome and shows data very similarly to the column chart, but functions exceptionally well when you want to see historical trends.
Picture
Shape Chart - Most commonly known as "the pie" chart.  These types of charts are great for showing proportional data, such as percentages. "25 percent of purchases are returned".
Picture
Bar Chart - Who doesn't love a good bar chart?  Bar charts are pretty much identical to the column chart.  Why use one over the other?  Some say it's aesthetics, maybe report layout or real estate that must be considered.
Picture
Area Chart - The venerable area chart!  An area chart can look pretty commanding if you have the right contrasting data.  They show the difference of change over time, and can help illustrate these changes among different types of products or services that you offer!
Picture
Range Chart - Range charts are exactly what they sound like.  "Show me the range of performance of these products", or "What was the high and the low for today's prices?".  Not all that popular, but are really cool if you ever need them.
Picture
Scatter Chart - Last but not least, we have the ol' scatter chart.  This one is special because it represents data popularity at a point in time.  For example, "Show me the most popular service desk incident today".

Drill-Down

The most popular item we have.  Static reports are great, but what if you could interact with your report?  Enter the drill-down.  Imagine a report with a chart of four columns, each column representing a count or percentage of the records.  What if you could click on that part of the chart and it would then show your detail records?  Click the back button and then drill-down on another subset of data?  Yeah, it's cool alright!  You can even start with a base detail report of a bunch of detail records and then click on a field that has a drill-down build into that field.  For example, department.  Click on "Accounting", then it will filter and only show Accounting's records!  If you have two or more drill-downs, then it would simply narrow your results.  Like magic.

Each field or chart object that requires a drill-down would be counted separately.  So if you want 4 fields to be able to drill down, then you would want add four drill-downs to the cart.

Static Email Subscription

The beauty of SSRS is that it has a great way to automatically email a recipient of a report (in excel, pdf or html format) on any specific schedule.  Whether you have us build the base report, or want to use your own, we will configure and test the email subscription functionality to ensure that those predictable reports get to management.  On the same token, SSRS can also drop the report export into a file server share.  This is a great way to keep history of your data, too!

Data-Driven Email Subscriptions

Data-driven subscriptions are simply awesome.  Let's say you want all 120,000 of your own customers or end users to receive a monthly report of their account balance or activity.  Well, you could create 120,000 subscriptions, but that might take a long time.  Instead, a data-driven subscription solves this by looking at a special query of those customers, then sending the report as an attachment via email to each customer with data only pertaining to the respective customer.  Like butter.  For a very small price, your customers and end users will love you for it!
